The Quilter's Guild (Lotus Wright & Mike T. Kerr)

Folk Art Music by lovers of the deep-dive

Banjo music, Ragtime, Country Blues, Folksong, and Jazz

After years of mutual admiration, Mike T. Kerr and Lotus Wight have created a musical union, a concoction of instruments and influences, each avenue explored down to its root by these unique musicians. While both in high demand as performers in their respective chosen fields- Wight in the folk and old-time festival circuit and Kerr as a highly in-demand guitarist on Toronto's live music scene- their shared passion for music history and rare recordings have given common musical ground together as performers. Mike's guitar playing recalls the entire history of the instrument while Lotus explores adventurously through many folkloric styles, handmade contraptions, and heartfelt stories.

Frisco Lee & Erik Fines @ GRR

Montreal born-and-raised, Frisco Lee is a multi-instrumentalist singersongwriter who’s been anchored in the underground music scene for over a decade and a half. Anglophone-francophone, hailing from the suburbs and armed with a Blues background, he began playing the bar circuits in 2013, and for the following decade, has made a name for himself as a musician for hire in many various live and studio projects – more recently associated with Sud-Ouest Recording Service and BabyHorse Records. Over time, he’s been cultivating a widely-varied collection of self-penned songs in the style of old Blues, Country, Folk and Jazz, striking a contemporary chord with Indie and Psychedelic stylings, and passionate about creating timeless sounds and pertinent poetry.

Erik Fines is a Montreal-based singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist whose original music takes from a wide variety of musical genres, including indie-rock, country, folk, as well as rhythm and blues and electronic music. Born in Peterborough, Ontario, Erik’s parents were both very involved in the local arts community; his father is a well known multi-instrumentalist and his mother a bar tender/booker at popular local bars/venues and through this he became involved in the local arts scene at an early age. Having played in many bands in his early days in Peterborough, Erik eventually moved to Montreal where he fronted the well-loved indie-rock formation, Bright Fuchsia. He eventually found himself deeply integrated into Montreal’s Sud-Ouest indie/folk/songwriter scene and stayed busy playing various instruments in bands with the likes of Frisco Lee, Clerel Djamen, Bud Rice, Jesse Stone, the Maybe Greys, and many others as well as becoming the host of the popular Bar De Courcelle Open Mic, a staple in the local community, for almost two years up until the pandemic came and brought everything to a screeching halt. With the new found time and space, and a vast catalogue of songs he’d written and accumulated over the years, as well as many new songs, Erik Fines is launching a solo career

#17- Graham Nicholas @ GrassRoots Ranch

With the release of his 4th full length album Black Creek (2023), Graham Nicholas has created an emotionally resonant world inhabited by troubled and love-hungry characters. Never alienated for their insecurities, his characters are instead respected by the empathetic voice of an honest songwriter. The new album finds Nicholas honing in on his concise form of storytelling and refining his irreverent sense of humour. Coupling his John Prine & Gordon Lightfoot narrative style with a backing band that hearkens back to the likes of The Band, Nicholas’ songs have found the right balance of warmth and grit. Listed by Now Magazine as one of their “2018 Toronto Musicians to Watch”, He has also shared the stage with the likes of Ron Hynes, James Keelaghan, Catherine MacLellan, Old Man Luedecke, Del Barber and Daniel Romano

#15- Clay Hazey @ GrassRoots Ranch

Blending tradition and exploration, Clay Hazey takes what he wants from country and western and fills in the blanks as he pleases. A true gateway to the world of twang, his unique aesthetic combines sharp, earnest songwriting with a raw voice and earworm melodies to create a sound both fresh and familiar.

Clay’s self-titled debut EP (2024), recorded by Nick Lanyon (Rapallo) and mixed by Jonathan Anderson (Andy Shauf, Ocie Elliott) earned spins on CBC Radio 1, charted on college radio in Burnaby and Toronto, and featured the standout single “Past Two” feat. Ocie Elliott’s Sierra Lundy — which played for over six months on SiriusXM’s NorthAmericana.

That same year, Clay landed performances at NXNE and Festival sur le Canal, and was a Mariposa Folk Fest showcase finalist. Exclaim named him one of their “Emerging Artists You Need to See.” His November Daylight Savings Tour with Jade Hilton and School House sold out Toronto, Kingston, Montreal, and Ottawa.

#11- Matt Lazenby & Halde

Matt Lazenby is a singer-songwriter based in Montreal. Born in England, Matt migrated to Montreal in the late 2000s and has played in bands such as Halde, The Constant Supervision, and Wind-Up Radio Sessions. He has toured across Québec and Canada with these projects, but more recently, he's been focused on his solo project. Earlier this year, Matt released two singles from his upcoming solo album, Clouds of Dragonflies. The album is a collection of nine beautifully interwoven folk songs, produced by his wife and musical collaborator, Sabrina Halde. It covers styles ranging from pastoral British folk, to Americana, to indie and retro pop-rock, and will be available as of May 1st.

Halde is Sabrina Halde’s solo project. She is the co-founder and singer of Montreal based indie pop band Groenland. After the band's success, she took a step back to reassess and go through a long transformation. She took refuge in a little house in Chertsey, Québec, to heal, create and reconnect, before releasing her first solo album in 2022. Halde's music can best be described as indie-pop, especially when playing with her band. However, in a more intimate context, Halde likes to express her folk and singer-songwriter side. She shares her soulful music in the hope it inspires anyone on the path of healing or self discovery. Halde is an ongoing exploration of self; it is what happens when we start letting go of the ideas we make of ourselves, good or bad.

Il décape l'ordinaire des choses avec une musique rapiécée aux sonorités d'Europe de l'est, de hiphop, de flamenco, de jazz et de blues. #5- Ryan McNally & MacMillan Camp Boys

While he’s best known for his interpretative playing of traditional acoustic blues and old time music, audiences can’t help but notice the influence that Northern living has had on his musical style. For the past 15 years McNally has called Whitehorse, YK his home.
Originally from Rockburn in rural southern Quebec, Ryan first discovered jazz and blues by uncovering a huge collection of ‘78 records that belonged to his grandfather. Then, as a teen, his curiosity for the sound and history anchored his love for the genres and it’s only grown stronger since.
McNally has become known for his diversity as a multi-instrumentalist. He plays guitar, harmonica, mandolin, violin and banjo, all in many different styles. Whether performing solo or with his band, his music is grounded in the legacy of the generations of players that came before him. All the while he continues to push the boundaries of his own signature sound.

The McMillan’s Camp Boys’ vast repertoire of traditional bluegrass and old-time music has been captivating audiences across Canada. The duo’s no-frills guitar, banjo, mandolin, and fiddle playing, alongside their tight vocal harmonies, have led them to share the stage with acclaimed artists like Juno-nominated Mama’s Broke and Nadine Landry & Sammy Lind of Foghorn Stringband. Their newest EP “So Long To The Kicking Horse Canyon and Other Folk Songs” is out now on Dartmouth’s Big Turnip Records.
